Insulation 101 For California Homes

Insulation 101 For California Homes

Proper insulation in your greater Sacramento area home can make a substantial difference in not only your comfort level, but how much you pay for energy costs. Is your home well-insulated? If not, you may feel a bit uncomfortable at times and your heating and cooling systems may run overtime, which essentially costs you money.

Here are a few helpful facts about the various types of insulation and their uses:

  • Batts and rolls are usually made of fiberglass, plastic or natural fibers, or mineral wool. They are used to insulate unfinished walls, floors, ceilings and foundation walls. This type of material is usually used between beams, studs and joists.
  • If you have a home under construction or are renovating your current home, concrete block, insulating concrete forms and structural insulated panels are good choices. These types of insulation typically come as foam boards, beads or liquid foam made of polystyrene, polyurethane, vermiculite or straw core. These materials are often used for unfinished walls, foundation walls, ceilings, floors and in roofs.
  • Do you have attic floors that are unfinished, new walls or an existing wall that doesn’t have the proper insulation? Sprayed foam types work well and are usually made of polyurethane, polyisocyanurate or cementitious materials.
  • Don’t forget about your ductwork. Ducts that are located in unconditioned spaces should be insulated. Fiberglass and mineral wool work well for this application. Insulating your ducts helps prevent heat loss, thereby eliminating waste and minimizing the amount of energy used in your home.

Most homeowners do not realize the huge impact that proper insulation has on household comfort levels and energy savings. When your home is well insulated, the cold or hot air outdoors has a hard time penetrating your home, meaning you stay comfortable and more money stays in your pocket.
